I, Alex Cross came after Alex Cross's Trial, but Trial could really be read at any time because it is more of a standalone story about Alex's great-grandfather.

Alex Cross HANDS DOWN is the better of the two. I am on Cross Country as well as 7th Heaven. Not one time was I not excited about a new Alex Cross book. As for the WMC, I haven't been excited about reading a new one since 3rd Degree. I have been sitting on 7th Heaven for at least a month and have picked up 3 other books by JP since so that should tell you which series is better.
